CBD: Mixing Things Up a Bit

One question that we get asked a lot is whether or not it’s okay to take two different kinds of CBD products at once.  A lot of CBD users are trying to target something specific with hemp, so it’s only natural that they would want to maximize their CBD experience by doubling up on different delivery methods. Basically, mixing CBD products.

We will discuss in-depth about what happens when you mix two different CBD products together.  Not only that, but also cover how and why your experience can vary depending on a number of factors having to do with each individual CBD product type you use.

Is it Alright to Be Mixing CBD Products?

First, let’s get one thing out of the way: it’s totally fine to take two different CBD products at once.  CBD is nontoxic to the human body, and the doses in which it’s taken shouldn’t be detrimental in any way.  So, taking two doses of CBD at once rather than one should not cause any real problems.  In fact, a lot of people take high doses of CBD on a daily basis as they find that it suits their needs.

Different Delivery Methods Can Have Different Effects

Another thing to consider is that taking two different types of CBD products, such as a tincture and a topical, tinctures and edibles, vapes and capsules, etc.  Basically, you are experiencing two different delivery methods.  Each delivery method has its own absorption rate be it internal or external, which means that it effects the body in its own unique way.  For one thing, unique absorption rates mean different timeframes during which the effects are active within the body.  Additionally, each delivery method has its own level of potency at which the CBD is felt in the body.

For instance, a CBD topical can peak within mere minutes due to the unique way in which CBD absorbs through the skin (transdermal method), and its effects can be quite potent.  Meanwhile, an edible can take up to two hours due to the natural process of digestion, and tends to be very subtle, while potentially lasting for hours at a time.  So, taking an edible and using a topical at the same time means that each type of administration will peak at a different time, instead of having all of the effects of CBD peak at once.

The Milligram Strengths Make a Difference, Too

Yes, milligram strength of each product has a lot to do with how your experience affects you.  There is obviously a difference between taking two low-potency products and two high-potency products.  So, if you are planning to combine CBD products, make sure that you take the milligram strengths of each into account.  Otherwise, you’ll be taking a concentration that’s different from what you are used to, and this may change how effective your CBD regimen is.

Type of CBD

Make sure that both products contain the same type of CBD.  When talking about type, we are referring to the way in which it was extracted.

  • Full Spectrum: Contains a full array of plant extracts, including essential oils, terpenes, and other cannabinoids, as well as up to 0.3% of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).
  • Broad Spectrum: Just like full spectrum, except there is no THC.
  • CBD Isolate: Simply pure CBD at its finest.

Some CBD enthusiasts prefer to stick to one type of strain because they find that it’s a strain that targets their specific manifestations.  Remember that mixing two different strains together can produce different effects from what you’re used to.  Of course, you very well may find that the resulting blend of strains is even more beneficial to you.

This one is a bit more superficial, but still worth pointing out.  If both products being taken sublingually, make sure that the flavor that would result from combining them is one that will agree with your palate.  For instance, mixing a strawberry-flavored gummy with a mint-flavored tincture could be quite nice.  But there are some flavor combinations that do not go well together, and you don’t want to end up with something that tastes so off-putting that you don’t want to take either product at all.

Overall Quality

Some people may want to start mixing CBD products together because one is of an inferior quality, and they believe that combining it with a better-quality product will produce better results.  However, we DO NOT recommend this, as all you’ll be doing is introducing low-quality CBD into your system.

Make sure that you only purchase CBD from trusted brands and manufacturers that produce quality products.  This way, when you do combine CBD-based products together, you’re getting excellent quality CBD no matter what.  Never try to buy cheap, low-quality cannabidiol in an effort to save money, thinking that you can simply combine it with a high-quality tincture and enjoy lots of benefits.  Again, it just won’t work.  Also, going cheaper is not always the answer.

What to Look Out for When Combining CBD Products

So, what should you be looking out for when taking two CBD products at once?

  1. If both products are high-potency, you want to be aware that you might feel a bit sleepy, as this is a side effect that has been reported by those who take extremely high amounts of CBD at one time.  Therefore, make sure that you’re going to be home for a few hours the first time you mix products and do not drive or operate heavy machinery as you could experience those sluggish-like effects that affect your day-to-day tasks.
  2. Another possibility is mild dry mouth that wears off once the cannabidiol is no longer peaking in the body.
